How to Talk to Your Child About Their Co-Parenting Story
Children raised in co-parenting families generally do best when their family structure is explained early, honestly, and matter-of-factly — not as a secret to be revealed later.
Ages 2-5
Keep it simple: "You have two homes and two parents who love you very much, and that's how our family works." Young children accept whatever is presented as normal.
Ages 6-10
Children start noticing that their family looks different from classmates'. Acknowledge the difference without apologizing for it, and answer questions honestly and age-appropriately as they come up.
Teens
Older children may want more detail about how the decision was made. Being honest about the intentionality behind the choice — that they were deeply wanted — tends to land well.
A consistent, unified message from both co-parents matters more than any specific wording.
