Co-Parenting vs Adoption vs Sperm Donor: Which Is Right for You?
There isn't one right path to parenthood — each option involves different trade-offs around involvement, biology, cost, and timeline.
Platonic co-parenting
Two people share parenting responsibilities without a romantic relationship. The child typically has a biological link to both parents, and both are actively involved in raising them. This requires strong compatibility and a solid written agreement.
Donor conception (known or anonymous)
One parent raises the child alone or with a partner, using sperm or egg donation. A known donor may have some contact with the child, but typically no parental role or legal rights, if structured with a proper agreement.
Adoption
No biological link is required. The process is longer and more regulated, but offers a path to parenthood for those for whom pregnancy isn't possible or desired.
How to decide
Ask yourself: do you want a second actively involved parent, or to raise the child primarily on your own? Is a biological connection important to you? How much time and cost can you realistically commit? Your answers will point you toward the right path.
